The question

What is the grade of Shareek's hadith from 'Ata', and where is the point of oddity (shudhudh) in the narration of Ibn 'Abbas that Al-Bayhaqi reported concerning the interpretation of the verse {Allah is He who created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof}, and does one chain of transmission count as a corroborating follow-up to another?

The answer

This narration is repudiated. It was narrated by Ibn Abi Hatim, Al-Hakim, and others, and authenticated by Al-Hakim, while Al-Bayhaqi said: "Its chain of narration is sound, but it is utterly anomalous (shadhdh), and I do not know of any follow-up narration for Abu Ad-Duha regarding it." Ibn Kathir quoted Al-Bayhaqi's statement and affirmed it, saying: "If its transmission from him is authentic, it should be understood that Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, took it from the Isra'iliyyat (Judeo-Christian traditions)." Imam Ahmad rejected the , and Adh-Dhahabi mentioned that Sharik and Ata' have some weakness in their narrations. Abu Hayyan Al-Andalusi said: "There is no doubt that this hadith is fabricated." As-Suyuti mentioned the hadith in his discussion of anomalous narrations (shadhdh), and quoted Al-Hakim's authentication, then said: "I have always wondered at Al-Hakim's authentication of it until I saw Al-Bayhaqi say: 'Its chain of narration is sound, but it is utterly anomalous (shadhdh).'" As for Al-Muallimi Al-Yamani, he mentioned that its chain of narration is not sound because Sharik makes many errors and practices tadlis (concealing defects in the chain), and Ata' bin As-Sa'ib suffered from اختلاط (confusion/memory loss) before his death, and Sharik's hearing from him was after his memory loss. The anomaly here lies in its contradiction of a matter known by necessity in religion.
