Fasting was ordained in the second year of the Hijra, after the souls of the Muslims had settled upon monotheism and prayer, and they had become accustomed to the commands of the Qur'an. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed away having fasted nine Ramadans.
