What is the ruling on a police officer in Palestine opening fire in self-defense to protect his life and weapon, knowing that he is a believer who fears death, in the event that he is exposed to extreme danger or siege and demanded to surrender his weapon?

It is permissible for a Muslim to repel an aggressor (ṣāʾil) from himself, his property, or his honor, using the least harmful means first. Jurists have differed regarding the ruling on repelling an aggressor. The Hanafis and some Malikis are of the opinion that it is obligatory to repel an aggressor against oneself and what is less than that, citing the Almighty's saying: ﴿And do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction﴾ (2:195), and the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "Whoever is killed defending his blood is a martyr."

Whereas the Shafi'is are of the opinion that it is obligatory to repel a disbelieving aggressor, but they said that it is not obligatory to repel a Muslim aggressor whose blood is not permissible to spill; rather, it is permissible to surrender to him. They cite the hadith (definition): "Be like the son of Adam," and what Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) did when he refrained from fighting despite being able to.
