How can one reconcile what was reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding obscene language, and his prohibition to Aisha, may God be pleased with her, from obscenity, with what was narrated from Imam Ali, may God be pleased with him, regarding his description of his wife using explicit sexual terms in front of strangers?

Islam enjoins upon its followers purity of speech and avoidance of obscenities, unless there is an overriding benefit. It is authentically reported from Ali ibn Abi Talib that he said: "Your women are the hariqah. No woman among them remained steadfast except Asma bint Umays." Al-hariqah refers to a woman overcome by her desires or one with a narrow vagina. As for the other tradition, it has no authentic chain of transmission; rather, it is found in linguistic texts to explain the meanings of words, not as texts of hadith (definition). Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was a human being, not infallible, and the example to follow is the Qur'an and the Sunnah (definition), for in the Messenger of Allah is an excellent example.
