Is it permissible for me to ask Allah by virtue of His love for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and does this differ from asking Him by virtue of the Prophet's status?

It has been previously clarified that the ruling on seeking intercession through the Prophet’s prestige (peace be upon him) is a matter of disagreement among scholars. As for seeking intercession through Allah Almighty’s love for His Prophet (peace be upon him), Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah holds that this is something external to the supplicant. He who asks by something external to himself, which is not a cause for his benefit, then similarly, Allah’s kindness to the prophets and righteous, His love for them, and His exaltation of their status do not necessitate the answering of the supplication of one who asks by them. However, if one were to ask Allah by his faith in Muhammad, his love for him, his obedience to him, and his following of him, then he would have asked by a great cause that necessitates the answering of the supplication.
