Is it permissible to perform a mubahalah against someone who denies an authentic hadith?

Whoever denies the authority of the Sunnah (definition) or disbelieves a hadith (definition) of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while knowing that it is from his words, has committed an act of disbelief (kufr). Mubahalah (invoking God's curse upon the liar) is permissible when a stubborn opponent persists in his falsehood, and it serves to complete the argument, establish the truth, and invalidate falsehood. Given the gravity of this matter, only a scholar is fit to undertake it, and it should be in an important issue from which general good is hoped, or to repel evil, discord (fitnah), or doubt (shubhah) in the religion. The general approach, however, is to advise the opponent and present evidence to him. If the one who denies a hadith is among the leaders of innovation and there is fear of him corrupting the people, and the scholars deem that inviting him to mubahalah would repel his corruption and protect the people, then they may engage him in mubahalah.
