Which is to be believed: the mother who denies having nursed a woman's son, or the woman who claims to have nursed him along with her daughter?

The preponderant view is that the testimony of a wet nurse alone, stating that she breastfed someone, is acceptable, because no specific benefit accrues to her from it, nor does it ward off any particular harm from her. This is supported by the hadith (definition) of 'Uqbah ibn Al-Harith in Sahih (definition) Al-Bukhari, when a woman came to him and said that she had breastfed him and his wife. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "How [can you remain married] when it has been said?" Al-Hafiz narrated from Ahmad ibn Hanbal his saying that the testimony of a single woman regarding suckling is permissible, based on this hadith.
