"Abortion blood is considered nifas (definition) (postnatal bleeding) if the fetus is formed, as Sheikh Ibn 'Uthaymeen stated. Blood that appears before the fetus is formed is not considered nifas, unless it coincides with the woman's usual menstrual period. Fetal formation does not necessarily entail the insufflation of the soul; the soul is breathed into the fetus after four months, as mentioned in the agreed-upon hadith (definition) of Ibn Mas'ud, and as agreed upon by scholars."
