When may a husband take back his divorced wife during the 'iddah (waiting period) of postpartum bleeding, and is it permissible to do so during the postpartum bleeding itself or after she becomes pure? And is a divorce pronounced during postpartum bleeding considered a minor irrevocable divorce that requires a new contract and dowry for the resumption of the marital relationship?

Divorce during the period of post-natal bleeding (nifas (definition)) is an innovated divorce (talaq (definition) bid'i) and not an irrevocable divorce (talaq ba'in). It is permissible for the husband to take back his wife before her purity or even until the end of her waiting period ('idda). Some scholars, such as the Malikis, consider it obligatory for the husband to take her back in this case, and the guardian (wali al-amr) would compel the husband to do so. The majority of scholars view it as recommended (mustahabb) to take the wife back in the case of an innovated divorce (such as divorce during menstruation or post-natal bleeding).
