Can a woman perform اعتکاف in her home?

Scholars have agreed that a man's i'tikaf (seclusion for worship) is not valid except in a mosque, based on the Almighty's saying: (And do not have sexual relations with them while you are in i'tikaf in the mosques). The majority of scholars hold that a woman is like a man; her i'tikaf is not valid except in a mosque, due to the same verse and because the wives of the Prophet, peace be upon him, performed i'tikaf in the mosque. If a woman's i'tikaf in her home were permissible, the Prophet would have guided her to it. Some scholars have allowed a woman's i'tikaf in the "mosque of her house" (musalla at home), but the majority of scholars have prohibited this, emphasizing that the "mosque of the house" is not a real mosque and does not take on the rulings of a mosque. Al-Nawawi holds that i'tikaf is not valid except in a mosque for both men and women, and it is not valid in the "mosque of the house." Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen stated that a woman performs i'tikaf in the mosque if there is no Sharia (definition)-based impediment.
