A husband's divorce of his wife is effective even during a severe quarrel, unless his anger reaches a state of unconsciousness. Kissing one's wife and enjoying her during her 'iddah (definition) (waiting period) is a matter of dispute: some permit it and some do not. According to the Hanafis, a revocable return (raj'ah) occurs merely by enjoying her. The 'iddah of a divorced woman is three menstrual cycles. If menstruation ceases due to breastfeeding or illness, she waits for menstruation until she reaches menopause (the age of despair), then she observes the 'iddah in months.
