The answer

Repentance from sin is obligatory, and injustices must be returned to their rightful owners or their forgiveness sought. It is preferable to disclose the amount of money to the employer, unless this disclosure would prevent the employer from granting absolution upon knowing the value. In that case, it is not permissible to withhold the disclosure. If the employer grants absolution while unaware of the amount, the absolution is valid, and the sin is removed. Jurists have differed regarding the validity of absolution from an unknown amount. Some permit it if gaining knowledge of the amount is impossible, while others absolutely forbid absolution from an unknown amount. The preponderant opinion is that absolution from an unknown amount is valid to prevent dispute, while seeking forgiveness is still recommended.
