Is it permissible for a surgeon who performs daily surgeries and finds that fasting causes him hardship that affects his concentration to break his fast?

Fasting Ramadan (definition) is obligatory for every adult, sane, resident, healthy Muslim, and it is a pillar of Islam. A Muslim must venerate this ritual by taking all possible measures to observe it. If his work makes fasting difficult for him, then he must transfer his work from day to night, or take his annual leave during Ramadan. If none of this is possible, then he is permitted to break his fast on the day he experiences significant hardship, and then make up for the days he missed before the next Ramadan begins.
