What is the ruling on placing charity in the mosque's donation box?

It is permissible to place voluntary charity (ṣadaqat al-taṭawwuʿ) in the boxes designated for the mosque, and this is a righteous deed for which the doer will be rewarded. However, it is not permissible to place in them because they do not fall under the eight categories for the distribution of zakat.
