Is it permissible to pay Zakat on money by purchasing school books and distributing them to poor students?

It is not permissible to give money to the poor in the form of in-kind items. Rather, it must be given to them in cash, because the poor person knows best what he needs, unless there is an overriding benefit in purchasing those in-kind items.
