Is it permissible to take zakat from the mother to pay off debt and get married, knowing that the son is her provider and that the money given is from her private account?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
It is permissible for the mother to give her to her son if he is in debt and cannot find the means to repay it, or if he needs it for marriage, as long as the son is capable of earning and spending on himself and supporting others. If the mother is obligated to spend on her son due to his poverty or inability to earn, then she is permitted to give him Zakat to pay off debt or for marriage, because these do not fall under the category of maintenance for which she is obligated.
