How is the zakat on potatoes paid by the farmer?

Potatoes are not subject to Zakat (definition) according to the most preponderant opinion among scholars, because they are vegetables. Zakat is obligatory on crops and fruits that are measured and stored as staple food, and this is the view of the majority. As for one who wishes to be cautious and adopts the view of the Hanafis, who hold that Zakat is obligatory on vegetables, he should give one-tenth of what is irrigated by rainwater or similar means, and one-half of one-tenth of what is irrigated by drawn water or similar means.
