Is it permissible to pay Zakat to purchase a prosthetic device for a disabled man?

Zakat (definition) is not paid to the disabled person solely because they are disabled, but rather due to their poverty or other categories of Zakat beneficiaries. Mere disability is not a reason for entitlement to Zakat. If the individual needs a device and cannot afford it, it is permissible to give them Zakat due to their poverty. It is better for the Zakat to be given to them in cash, allowing them to purchase whatever they wish. Some scholars permit purchasing the device for them and paying its value if there is a benefit in doing so.
