Is zakat obligatory on honey?

Some scholars, like Imam Ahmad, held the view that zakat (definition) on honey is obligatory, basing their opinion on prophetic hadiths and narrations from the Companions. However, the majority of scholars, such as Malik and Al-Shafi'i, maintained that zakat is not obligatory on honey. They either deemed the hadiths mentioned in this regard as weak or interpreted them to mean that any honey taken was in exchange for protection. Zakat on honey is only obligatory if it is prepared for sale, its value reaches the nisab (definition), and a year has passed on it, in which case a quarter of a tenth is due.
