The idols worshipped by the polytheists were not jinn. However, the jinn led the polytheists astray and beautified for them the worship of idols, so they obeyed them. Ibn Kathir mentioned that Allah will rebuke the polytheists on the Day of Resurrection and ask the angels: {Was it you that they used to worship?} The angels will reply: {Exalted are You! You are our Protector, not them. Rather, they used to worship the jinn}, meaning the devils who beautified for them the worship of idols. Al-Baghawi mentioned that the polytheists obeyed the devils in worshipping the angels, and that most of them believed the devils.
