The question

Is it permissible to study philosophy, teach it, and pursue it as a profession? Is it also permissible to utilize a philosophy degree in another field, especially given the mockery of religion by some professors, the impossibility of employing religious arguments in exams, and the parents' opposition to discontinuing studies?

The answer

It is impermissible to study or teach philosophy that deals with the fundamentals of religion and matters of the unseen through a purely rational and atheistic methodology, except for someone who is fortified with Islamic knowledge and whose intention is to refute falsehood and repel doubts. If you are not firmly grounded in Islamic knowledge, it is not permissible for you to study or teach it, due to the danger this poses to religion. There is no obedience to parents in this matter except in what is good and permissible. We advise you to acquire beneficial Islamic knowledge and to consistently seek answers from scholars, while refraining from attending gatherings where religion is mocked if you are unable to denounce it, due to the Almighty's saying: "And He has already revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and ridiculed, do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, in that case, you would be like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together" (An-Nisa: 140). We also emphasize that honoring parents and obeying them in what is good and permissible is one of the greatest acts of proximity to Allah and a cause for His success.
