What is the meaning of life, and the reason for man's test in it, if his destiny—Heaven or Hell—is determined from his birth?
The People of and Community believe in divine decree () and affirm for the servant the ability, choice, and acquisition (kasb) through which legal obligations are related. Therefore, a person is "facilitated for what he was created for," and is not merely predetermined or simply given a choice. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, addressed the issue of abandoning work due to reliance on divine decree by saying: "Work, for everyone is facilitated for what he was created for," citing verses from Surat Al-Layl. Good deeds are a sign of success, and evil deeds are a sign of perdition, and these are indicative signs, not causative ones, for Allah has concealed the knowledge of the unseen. Fear and hope are the foundation of servitude, and work in this world is an indication of a servant's destiny in the Hereafter.
