What is the meaning of the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) saying: "Wealth is not in abundance of possessions, but wealth is in the richness of the soul (self)?"

The meaning of the Hadith (definition) is that true richness is not in an abundance of worldly possessions. Many of those upon whom Allah has bestowed ample wealth remain poor in spirit, never content with what they have been given, and constantly striving for more. As for true richness, it is the richness of the soul, which is content with little, accepting of Allah's decree, and not eager for more. The richness of the soul is the gateway to contentment with divine decree and submission to Allah's command. Thus, the praiseworthy richness is the richness of the soul and its fulfillment, not an abundance of wealth coupled with a relentless pursuit of more. The Hadith guides us to understand that the beneficial or great richness is the richness of the soul. When the soul becomes self-sufficient, it abstains from greed, gaining dignity and greatness. And whoever finds self-sufficiency in his Lord, the Mighty and Exalted, over all His creation, that is indeed true richness.
