The answer

The method of the righteous predecessors (Salaf al-Salih) was to shun the company of people of desires (Ahwa') and doubts (Shubuhat), especially for those who are not firmly grounded in knowledge. As for the atheist's question, "Can God create a rock so heavy that He cannot lift it?", the answer is that Allah is capable of all things. He is capable of creating it, annihilating it, and moving it. This question is fundamentally flawed, for "there is nothing like unto Him," and no parables should be struck for Him, nor is He questioned about what He does. The signs of His power and greatness are evident in the universe and creatures, and humanity is called upon to reflect on them to recognize the greatness of Allah. As for his question about Allah's actions before the creation of Adam and Eve, and the heavens and the earth, the obligation is to believe in what Allah has informed us about His past and future creation, and to remain silent about what He has not informed us about. Allah was, with His attributes, ancient before His creation. He did not gain anything through their creation that was not already part of His attributes before them. Creation is an attribute of His, firmly established for Him, Glorified be He. The fundamental principle of faith is: "He is not questioned about what He does, but they will be questioned."
