Why this matters in my religion
Work is where trust and money meet every single day. A gift on a desk, or a paycheck that arrives late, can quietly cross a line. Both posts sit at the point where money changes hands for a reason that is not always stated.
This library does not judge your workplace for you. It names what each situation turns on and links you to the fuller, sourced answer.
The idea, simply
Two posts, covering money that changes hands and work that is owed.
- Bribes, commissions, gifts to employees: where is the line? It turns on *niyyah*, intention, since the same handshake can mean different things.
- What are workers' rights in Islam: salary, hours, honesty? It turns on *ijarah*, a hire contract, a known service for a known wage.
Both posts return to the same test: what was actually agreed, and why the money moved. Naming the purpose honestly is most of the work in both cases.

What does this require of me?
- Name exactly what was given or promised, and by whom.
- Say what the payment was actually for, in your own words.
- Bring your contract's real terms: pay, hours, and what counts as overtime.
- Separate a normal courtesy from a payment tied to a decision.
- Note whether refusing the payment or the extra work is realistic for you.
- A mufti weighs the purpose behind the money, not just the amount.
When do I need to ask a scholar?
Ask when a gift arrives attached to a decision you are about to make. Ask when your pay, hours, or overtime do not match what was agreed. Ask when everyone around you calls a practice normal, but you are unsure. Ask when refusing a gift or a request could cost you your job.
