The answer

Al- is what is slaughtered for a newborn out of gratitude to Allah under specific conditions. It is a (recommended act) and not obligatory. Two sheep are sacrificed for a male and one sheep for a female, as stated in the : "For a boy, two equivalent sheep, and for a girl, one sheep." A cow or a calf is not sufficient for three children.
