Is it permissible for a committed female student, adhering to the Shar’i dress code and wearing the niqab, to specialize in general surgery, knowing that this specialization may require uncovering the arm out of necessity and that she will be surrounded by men at work, but she is committed to avoiding mixing [with men] except out of utmost necessity?

There is no objection to specializing in surgery or other fields, provided that the limits of Islamic law are observed. However, it is not permissible to uncover the forearms in front of non-mahram (definition) men unless there is a necessity. Therefore, if the specialization necessitates uncovering the forearms in front of non-mahram men, then it is not permissible. But if it is possible to maintain the hijab (definition) during study, then there is no objection.
