What is the ruling on wearing a graduation gown, taking into consideration that it should not resemble church attire, such as being similar to a dress, and what are the regulations for the শরعي (Sharia-compliant) abaya?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
Wearing graduation attire is prohibited if it involves imitation of disbelievers, due to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them," whether or not the imitation was intended. The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta stated that the graduation "robe" is among the garments of Christians, and therefore, it is not permissible to wear it. However, if the attire does not involve imitation of disbelievers' clothing and is a uniform to signify graduation, then there is no objection to it, provided that it is modest and covers the body.
