The meaning of the Prophet's (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Your Greatness from being suddenly struck from beneath me" is to seek refuge from affliction coming suddenly, without a person being aware of it. It has also been said that what is meant by it is being swallowed by the earth.
