The question

What is the ruling on getting to know a girl with the intention of marriage and becoming engaged to her, despite not owning a home or having a stable income, while observing God's command not to be alone with her? And is what is circulated about the will of the guardian of the Messenger of Allah’s Sanctuary – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – that he saw the Messenger – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – in a dream, true?

The answer

It is forbidden to establish a relationship between a man and a woman outside the framework of marriage. All relationships of love and infatuation are forbidden and lead to worse outcomes. Both parties must sincerely repent by abandoning this relationship, regretting it, and resolving not to return to it. If the repentance is sincere, there is no impediment for the man to propose to the girl if he is able to marry, and expensive costs are not a condition for marriage. A Muslim is not permitted to harbor ill suspicions about others without evidence; the default assumption for a Muslim is uprightness. The ruling on the will attributed to Sheikh Ahmad in no. 38868 has also been noted.
