It is recommended to listen to the Quran, based on the Almighty's saying: "And when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy." (7:204) Purity (tahara) is not a condition for listening. As for recitation, it is permissible with minor ritual impurity ( asghar) but prohibited with major ritual impurity (hadath akbar). It is permissible to recite along with the reciter for the purpose of learning; otherwise, listening attentively is better.
