The question

What is the difference between the whispering of the self and the whispering of Satan, and should a woman be invoked by name or generally to obtain her as a wife, especially when one feels a palpitation upon hearing her name and a premonition against invoking her by name?

The answer

There is no harm in supplicating for marriage to a specific person, but it is better to entrust the matter to Allah Almighty to facilitate a righteous spouse, as this embodies perfect reliance on Allah and the desirability of comprehensive supplications (jawami' al-kalim), as 'Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, preferred comprehensive supplications and abandoned what was other than that." If specifying is necessary, it is good to qualify the supplication with goodness, such as saying: "If there is good for me in so-and-so, then facilitate her for me," for perhaps something desired, once obtained, could be a cause of destruction.
