What are the pangs of death that a person feels, and how do we reconcile them with the martyr's feeling of only a prick at the time of his death?

The throes of death are the pains and aches that afflict the dying person as a result of the soul leaving the body. These throes afflict every human being, and their severity varies; however, they are lighter for believers and more intense for disbelievers. Allah intensifies the throes of death for the prophets to increase their reward. Thus, the intensity of death does not indicate a deficiency in rank; rather, for the believer, it is either an increase in their good deeds or an expiation for their sins. The martyr is exempted from the pain of these throes, feeling nothing more than the pain of a pinch.
