What is the ruling on a schizophrenic and depressed patient who is aware of the ruling on suicide, hates life, and prays to God for martyrdom—are his visions true or from Satan, and does God answer the distressed?

Mental illness does not nullify religious obligations unless it deprives the patient of their intellect. It is disliked to wish for death due to worldly harm. It is Sunnah (definition) to say: "O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and cause me to die when death is better for me." However, if one fears harm to their religion, then there is no dislike. The supplication for martyrdom is a great good, and the supplication of the distressed is answered by the will of Allah, provided it is free from obstacles to its acceptance, such as hastiness. A dream may be good, and one must be patient with Allah's decree. A Muslim should safeguard Allah's commands for Allah to safeguard him, and get to know Him in prosperity for Him to know him in adversity. He should ask Allah and seek His help, and know that victory comes with patience and relief comes with distress.
