Is a schizophrenic patient considered "mabṭūn" (one who dies of an internal ailment)? And is he considered a martyr if he dies from his illness? What is the extent of his reward for his illness despite his abandoning prayer? Is he treated with ruqyah (Islamic exorcism) or psychotherapy? What is his recompense, and will he be forgiven if Allah takes his soul after his brain cells have deteriorated?

Legitimate ruqyah and divine remedies, such as charity, supplication, and Zamzam water, have an effect in curing all diseases. A person afflicted with schizophrenia is not considered "afflicted in his belly" (mabṭūn), but he is rewarded for his patience. As for prayer, it is obligatory for the person afflicted with schizophrenia if he is aware and sane, and he sins by abandoning it. In fact, some scholars consider the one who abandons prayer to be a disbeliever.
