Is it permissible to pray the Sunnah (supererogatory) prayers while having missed obligatory prayers from childhood?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If what is meant by "young age" is the period before puberty, then there is no obligation to make up missed prayers. However, if what is meant is the period of youth after puberty, and the ترك الصلاة (abandonment of prayer) was deliberate, then it is obligatory to make them up according to the majority of scholars, provided that essential worldly needs are not neglected. Scholars differ regarding performing supererogatory prayers for someone who has make-up prayers due. Ibn Rushd believes that no supererogatory prayers should be performed except for the Witr and the regular Sunnah of Fajr, while Ibn al-Arabi considers performing supererogatory prayers permissible.
