Who is Abdullah ibn Umm Maktoum, is he among the Companions (Sahabah), and what is a brief overview of his life?

The name seen on some charitable organizations is that of the noble Companion Abd Allah ibn Umm Maktoum. His mother is Atikah bint Abd Allah al-Makhzumiya. He was among the early emigrants (muhajirun), and he was blind and served as a muezzin for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, along with Bilal. He emigrated shortly after the Battle of Badr. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, respected him and appointed him as his deputy in Medina to lead the people in prayer. He is the blind man concerning whom the verses were revealed: "He frowned and turned away, because there came to him the blind man." [Quran 80:1-2]. It is said that he was martyred on the Day of Qadisiyyah, and it is also said that he died in Medina thereafter.
