What are the Sunan al-Fitra?
The sunan al-fitra (practices of natural disposition) are numerous, with some scholars enumerating them as many as thirty. These are among the practices of the Prophets, peace be upon them. It is authentically reported in Sahih Muslim, on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The fitra is five, or five things are of the fitra: circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the nails, plucking the armpit hair, and trimming the mustache." Similarly, in the hadith narrated by Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), they are ten, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Ten things are of the fitra: trimming the mustache, letting the beard grow, using the siwak (tooth-stick), sniffing water into the nose, trimming the nails, washing the finger-joints (or knuckles), plucking the armpit hair, shaving the pubic hair, and cleaning oneself with water after answering the call of nature," and the tenth was rinsing the mouth.
