The answer

It is not possible to identify the first woman who sailed the sea. As for the woman whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave glad tidings of sailing the sea as a warrior, she was Umm bint Milhan, the wife of 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit. She sailed the sea during the time of Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with both of them) and died when she fell from her mount after dismounting from the sea, as reported in Al-Bukhari and Muslim.
