What is the status of non-People of the Book in an Islamic state, and are they given the choice between Islam, jizya, or combat?

Muslims must invite disbelievers to Islam and lead them from the darkness of polytheism to the light of monotheism. If they embrace Islam, then so be it. Otherwise, scholars have differed regarding those from whom jizya (tribute) may be taken.
