How can one balance treating friends, family, and guests who waste time kindly, while preserving one's personal time without falling into ill manners or squandering life fruitlessly, especially since attempts at frankness have been unavailing and relationships are difficult to sever?
We commend the questioner's diligence in preserving her time, for life is a person's capital. We advise her not to be excessive in asceticism by avoiding conversation with people and friends. Rather, her conversations with them should be beneficial, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No people sit in a gathering without remembering Allah, the Almighty, and invoking blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, except that it will be a source of regret for them on the Day of Resurrection, even if they enter Paradise for their reward." We also advise her to skillfully extricate herself and apologize to those who waste time and lives, using convincing excuses. Ibn al-Jawzi, in "Sayd al-Khatir," mentioned how he dealt with the problem of time-wasters by assigning tasks that did not preclude conversation during their meetings, such as cutting paper, sharpening pens, and binding notebooks.
