Is it permissible to continue punishing oneself by repeating the Quran as a means to quit smoking, and for other acts of obedience?

What appears is the permissibility of punishing oneself by obliging it to perform an act of obedience, and this is indicated by the actions of some of the predecessors. However, what is obligatory is to immediately stop smoking all at once, because it is among the evil, forbidden things, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, commanded us to completely avoid what is prohibited.
