Will God hold me accountable for actions I ignored due to obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), believing them to be from the OCD, and then it became clear to me that they were real?
When an individual afflicted by obsessive thoughts (waswas) disregards these thoughts, they have acted in accordance with what Allah has legislated for them and have done what Allah loves. They are not held accountable for their disregard because they have conformed to the sacred law. Even if, hypothetically, they disregarded thoughts that were not in fact waswas, they would not be held accountable, because they did what Allah commanded them to do. Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity, and indeed He (the Exalted) said: "So fear Allah as much as you are able." Therefore, the person afflicted by waswas should completely ignore these obsessive thoughts and not pay them any attention.
