What is the ruling on naming a female child Maria?

Naming a female "Maria" (Marriyah) is permissible, as some female Companions were named it, among them Maria al-Qibtiyyah, the concubine of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the mother of his son Ibrahim. The linguistic meaning of Maria is "smooth" and "a Mariyah woman: white and radiant."
