Is it permissible for a sick person to inform others of his illness, or is it better to conceal it?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible for a sick person to disclose their illness for a legitimate purpose, such as seeking prayers, medicine, or a fatwa. The proof for this is that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, visited Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas and inquired about his illness. It is disliked to disclose an illness if it is done out of discontent. It is recommended to conceal one's illness if it is done out of contentment and patience, as this is part of perfect patience. Al-Bukhari dedicated a chapter in his Sahih titled "The permissibility of the sick person saying: 'I am in pain.'"
