Is it permissible for a doctor to tell his patient that he will die soon?

A visitor to the sick should give them good tidings of recovery and minimize the severity of their illness, owing to the positive psychological impact this has. The Prophet, peace be upon him, did this with Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas. As for informing the patient about the reality of their illness, this depends on their psychological state. If they are strong-willed and not easily affected, they should be informed, especially if they have matters that need to be arranged. However, if they are weak-willed and there is a fear of them being affected, it is preferable not to inform them, because the psychological state aids in recovery. It is permissible for a doctor to estimate the duration of the illness based on the condition, without certainty, but this should not be widely disseminated so as not to affect the patient's and their family's morale. It is preferable to keep the door of hope for recovery open.
