What is the ruling on befriending non-Muslims and accepting their gifts, and is it permissible to gift them a copy of the Qur'an for the purpose of inviting them to Islam?

It is legislated for a Muslim to show kindness to a non-combative disbeliever, to accept their gift, and to give gifts to them, while striving to interact with them with Islamic morals and seeking their guidance. The Prophet, peace be upon him, accepted gifts from polytheists and sought to reconcile with them. He also permitted Asma to visit her polytheist mother. Similarly, Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, sent a garment to his polytheist brother. This is particularly emphasized when a disbeliever is ill or close to death, as the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was keen on guiding Abu Talib and a Jewish boy who used to serve him. It is permissible to give non-Muslim disbelievers some pamphlets or discs that speak about Islam and translations of the meanings of the Holy Quran, but not the Quran itself.
