Is it permissible to precede the Imam in the funeral prayer?

It is not permissible to precede the Imam in the funeral prayer, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The Imam is appointed to be followed." Whenever one precedes the جنازة (bier), or the grave, or the Imam, the prayer of the one who preceded is invalid.
