What is the ruling on a son shunning his abusive father who instigates problems with insults and slander, and what is the ruling on the son not seeking reconciliation for fear of repeated problems? And is the son's attempt at reconciliation sufficient to ward off God's punishment, even if reconciliation does not yield a result?
The rights of parents are immense, and Allah Almighty has coupled their rights with His own in the matter of monotheism, commanding obedience to them in what is good, even if they are disbelievers. Therefore, it is not permissible for a son to boycott his father or treat him with ill manners, for that is an act of disobedience (uquq), which is among the greatest major sins. The son must repent and be dutiful to his father, for "the Lord's pleasure is in the father's pleasure, and the Lord's displeasure is in the father's displeasure." If the son exerts his effort in dutifulness and the father does not respond, there is no sin upon the son as long as he reiterates his efforts. As for the father's interference in his son's life, this should be handled with patience and by housing the wife away from the father, and it does not justify boycotting him.
