What is the ruling on conducting a university research paper on the operations of banks within a usurious bank, given the unavailability of Islamic banks in one's country of residence?
First, research should be conducted on Islamic banks to clarify, identify, and promote Islamic transactions. There is no objection to researching interest-based banks to clarify and distinguish usurious transactions, so that people may be fully aware of them, for knowing evil is to guard against it. The proof for this is the Almighty's saying: (And thus do We explain the verses, and that the way of the criminals may become apparent) and Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "The people used to ask the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about good, and I used to ask him about evil for fear that it might overtake me." Based on this, there is no harm in preparing research on interest-based banks, especially when there is no Islamic bank. It is preferable to come up with practical suggestions for avoiding usury.
